#Vietnam - Hanoi joins UNESCO's Creative Cities Network

Vietnam's capital city is one of 66 cities that were designated by UNESCO in early November as Creative Cities in various categories.
Hanoi got the UNESCO honour in the ‘Design’ category for its developed design industry, opportunities for creating designs from natural materials and conditions and the presence of active design groups.

Following the designation, the city plans to issue a long-term action program and connect its policies to promote cultural industries and enrich cultural resources, municipal authorities said.

It will also help other Vietnamese cities make it into the Creative Cities Network and contribute to the network’s development.

The Creative Cities Network was launched in 2004 to promote cooperation with and between cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

Besides Hanoi, 11 other Asian cities entered the list this time: Wonju and Jinju in South Korea, Yangzhou and Nanjing in China, Ambon in Indonesia, Asahikawa in Japan, Bangkok and Sukhothai in Thailand, Cebu in the Philippines, and Hyderabad and Mumbai in India.

The network now has a total of 246 cities in seven categories: music, arts and folk crafts, design, cinema, literature, digital arts, and gastronomy.

By winning the UNESCO recognition, Hanoi will get opportunities to cooperate with other creative cities in the network and can market itself as an attractive destination for visitors.

Last July the city celebrated 20 years of it being granted the "City for Peace" title by UNESCO, recognizing its contributions to the struggle for peace, its efforts to promote equality in the community, protect the environment, promote culture and education, and care for younger generations.

Hanoi has a number of architectural works with a long history like the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage site; the Hanoi Opera House; the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum; and the Nhat Tan Bridge, according to the city tourism department.

2018 was a successful year for Hanoi’s tourism sector with a record high 5.74 million foreign visitors, up 16 percent against 2017. The capital received 4.7 million foreign tourists in the first nine months of this year, up 10 percent year-on-year.

#Indonesia to promote #Golf tourism in #Japan

.
The Tourism Ministry is set to hold the 2017 Indonesia Golf Sales Mission event in Katori city, northern Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on June 8.

This event is part of the ministry’s effort to achieve this year’s target of welcoming 762,000 Japanese tourists to Indonesia.

“Four sellers are set to participate in this event, namely Bali Fantastic, Riverside Golf Club, Multi Holiday and the Garuda Indonesia [branch] in Tokyo. They are at the frontlines in selling golf travel packages to 50 buyers consisting of travel agents, golf communities and associations in Katori,” said I Gde Pitana, the ministry's deputy for overseas promotion.

The event, supported by the Indonesian Embassy in Japan, Visit Indonesia Tourism Office (VITO) Japan and the Indonesian Golf Course Owners Association (APLGI), will be held at the Narita no Mori Country Club.

The ministry's deputy assistant for Asia Pacific tourism promotion, Vinsensius Jemadu, said the sales mission will promote Indonesia's 10 priority destinations of Lake Toba, Tanjung Kelayang, Tanjung Lesung, Thousand Islands, Borobudur temple, Bromo - Tengger - Semeru, Mandalika, Wakatobi, Labuan Bajo and Morotai.

“A number of foreign and local investors are invited to develop these destinations. But apart from them, the historic relations between Japan and Indonesia have resulted in plenty of Japanese caves located across the archipelago. The tight relationship between the two countries was also evidenced during Japan’s fifth anniversary [event] of the tsunami disaster a few months ago at the Aceh Tsunami Museum,” said Vinsensius.

TAT board appoints three deputy chiefs, #Thailand

THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand yesterday appointed three new deputy governors, who will drive a five-year plan that will focus on domestic tourism amid global instability.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the agency's board had approved the appointment of three internal executives who will replace people due for retirement at the end of this month.

He said Srisuda Wanapinyosak, executive director for the East Asia region, would be the deputy governor for the Asia-Pacific region, Sujitra Jongchansitto, director for the Northern region, would be deputy governor for the domestic market, and Visanu Jaroensilp, executive at the office of the governor, would be deputy governor for tourism products.

The appointments will be effective on October 1.

Those retiring are Pongsathorn Kessasamli, deputy governor for Asean markets, Vilaiwan Twichasri, deputy governor for tourism products, and Anupharp Thirarath, deputy governor for domestic marketing.

Yuthasak said the board also approved a five-year tourism plan for 2017-2021. It will focus more on domestic tourism as well as pushing synergy with international markets.

Furthermore, it will concentrate more on promoting new destinations in second-tier provinces.

It is speculated that the new plan has taken on a domestic focus because global tourism is facing difficulties due to economic slowdowns and conflicts in many countries that affect Thai tourism.

However, TAT has prepared strategic measures to deal with instability by using the Internet and social media to lure international tourists to the country. The agency will continue promoting the country as a globally popular destination as well as a safe one despite the recent deadly incident at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok.

To restore tourist confidence after the bomb blast in August at the shrine, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanav rangkul has been travelling overseas and asking tourism alliances to help promote Thailand.

Kobkarn is currently in Japan. She has met with public and private bodies in an effort to regain tourists' confidence, particularly ahead of the coming high season.
