Russians still biggest tourist group in Phuket, peak expected during holidays

Russians remain Phuket’s biggest tourist group, and the island resort’s tourism is expected to peak during the holidays, according to the president of the Southern Thai Hotels Association, Sueksit Suwannadissakun, who believes the peak of tourism High Season will be between December 24 to January 5.

About 57% of hotels in the island province reopened in October, jumping to 70% in November, according to Sueksit. He said the association expects that during Christmas and New Year, 80% of Phuket hotels will be opened. Sueksit told The Phuket Express…

“The top tourists are now Russians which is about 25% of total visitors, secondly followed by Indians at 12%, and finally Singaporeans and Australians at 6%. These four groups of tourists are almost half of the overall tourism market in Phuket.”

Sueksit added that most other tourists in Phuket are Europeans coming to Thailand for the warm winter here.

In November, Phuket saw 55,097 Russian tourists arriving on its shores. The second largest tourist group in Phuket that month came from India, with 26,525 travellers, according to Phuket Immigration.

The recent swarm of Russian tourists in Thailand has taken the country’s tourism forces completely by surprise. Despite the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian tourism market has returned much quicker than expected, according to the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) last month.

Chartered flights to Phuket and Pattaya are being filled by Russian tourists. Less than two weeks after Russian airlines made their triumphant return to Phuket, Aeroflot announced an increase in direct flights to the island. The flagship airline of Russia made known on November 12 that it would be adding 14 new flights a week from Russia to Phuket.

As of October 26, Thailand witnessed 7,349,843 international tourists arrive at its airports. According to the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thailand is on course to attract around 11 million tourists this year.

Pattaya’s stupid rules are ruining tourism efforts

Ridiculous disease-control measures are undermining Pattaya’s efforts to rebuild tourism, the city’s top business representative said.
Boonanan Pattanasin, president of the Pattaya Business & Tourism Association, said there is virtually no point in organizing festivals and events like the Pattaya Music Festival if alcohol cannot be sold in the city and crowd sizes are unnecessarily limited.

Attendance at the weekend’s music festival and hotel bookings in Pattaya both disappointed and can be blamed directly on overly strict disease-control measures, he said.

Only 150 people were allowed into the gated stage area at each of the three music festival venues. City officials claimed this was to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 by limiting crowd size, spacing attendees a meter apart and prohibiting standing or dancing.

But Boonanan pointed out what everyone else saw and scoffed at: Right outside the fences, people packed in with no attempt at social distancing or crowd control.

The truly laughable thing, Boonanan said, was that current health regulations allow for crowds of up to 1,000 people.

While alcohol normally is prohibited at music festivals held on public land, Boonanan said the fact that restaurants and vendors near the festival sites are banned from selling alcohol also depressed interest in the concerts.

Even though Chonburi Province has once denied a PBTA appeal of the alcohol ban, Boonanan said the organization would try again, making its case in stronger terms.

If the association’s pleas are ignored, he said, Pattaya should save the money and not bother with staging festivals because few people will come.

The PBTA said it has met with Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome about the music festival crowd size and he admitted that it was held under outdated rules, Boonanan said.

The PBTA said it wants next weekend’s festival to allow 1,000 people into the seating area and better organize the crowd outside. – Pattaya  Mail

Dig out your red clothes, hang up paper lanterns and pick up some firecrackers — Chinese New Year is returning to Bangkok.

The biggest celebrations will take place on Yaowarat Road in the heart of Chinatown, with cultural displays, dance and musical performances to usher in the Year of the Monkey.

Kicking off on Feb. 7, the Chinatown festivities will also feature lantern decorations, dragon parades and lion dances, street stalls selling Chinese cuisine and souvenirs, and entertainment from famous artists, including troupes and performers from China.

Visanu Jaroensilp, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) deputy governor for Tourism Products and Business said: “Thailand’s celebrations to mark the 2016 Chinese New Year will be even more special, as this is a significant year for the country.

Strict ban on floating lanterns near Bangkok landmarks and airports.

THE BANGKOK Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has warned that anybody selling or releasing airborne lanterns in key venues with tall and large buildings from 6pm today until 5am tomorrow would face up to three months in jail and/or Bt6,000 in fines.

The venues included palaces, temples, historic sites, event-organising places and government offices. Warning signs have also been posted at 32 piers and pontoons along the Chao Phraya River and 21 along canals prohibiting their use during the Loy Krathong festival. They include the Wang Lang (Siriraj) Pier, Suraosaikongdin School Pier, Wat Bukkalo Pier, Chongnonsee Pier and Wat Chatkaewchongkolnee Pier.

As for those that can be used, the city has also posted signs notifying the public about the pier's load limit, which is usually up to 60 persons.

The ban on floating lanterns was announced last week by deputy Bangkok governor Pol Maj-General Atsawin Kwanmuang, based on the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act 2007's Sections 21, 22, 32 and 37.

Floating lanterns are strictly prohibited in areas near Suvarnabhumi Airport, namely Prawet, Nong Chok, Suan Luang, Min Buri, Khlong Sam Wa and Lat Krabang districts. Areas near Don Meuang International Airport are Don Muang, Bang Khen, Lak Si, Sai Mai, Bang Sue, Lat Phrao, Dusit, Phaya Thai and Chatuchak districts.

Up North, Chiang Mai International Airport director Group Captain Wisoot Chantana yesterday affirmed that a total of 84 flights had been cancelled and another 40 rescheduled from yesterday until tomorrow as a measure to avoid the floating lanterns.

Wisoot said this encouraged visitors to arrive earlier and stay longer in the province, hence generating more spending. He said the number of arrivals in the two to three days before the festival had risen to 17,000 per day from the usual 12,000. He said visitors had been informed about flight cancellations or rescheduling, so they could plan accordingly.

Meanwhile, local craftsmen in Chiang Mai dismissed as untrue a viral post circulating in social media about floating lanterns being attached to small cooking-gas cylinders to keep them afloat longer and rise higher.

Nikorn Wongwiraj, owner of the Loongthong Khomloy shop, said such an invention was not likely to rise as high as 6,000 metres. He said the lanterns were made of paper, wire and bamboo so they are light enough to float and could not possibly carry a cylinder.

He explained that if there were such lanterns in reality, they would have to be rather enormous with a 10-metre radius to carry the weight, hence it would be witnessed by far more people if it were ever to take to the skies.
