Russians still biggest tourist group in Phuket, peak expected during holidays

Russians remain Phuket’s biggest tourist group, and the island resort’s tourism is expected to peak during the holidays, according to the president of the Southern Thai Hotels Association, Sueksit Suwannadissakun, who believes the peak of tourism High Season will be between December 24 to January 5.

About 57% of hotels in the island province reopened in October, jumping to 70% in November, according to Sueksit. He said the association expects that during Christmas and New Year, 80% of Phuket hotels will be opened. Sueksit told The Phuket Express…

“The top tourists are now Russians which is about 25% of total visitors, secondly followed by Indians at 12%, and finally Singaporeans and Australians at 6%. These four groups of tourists are almost half of the overall tourism market in Phuket.”

Sueksit added that most other tourists in Phuket are Europeans coming to Thailand for the warm winter here.

In November, Phuket saw 55,097 Russian tourists arriving on its shores. The second largest tourist group in Phuket that month came from India, with 26,525 travellers, according to Phuket Immigration.

The recent swarm of Russian tourists in Thailand has taken the country’s tourism forces completely by surprise. Despite the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian tourism market has returned much quicker than expected, according to the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) last month.

Chartered flights to Phuket and Pattaya are being filled by Russian tourists. Less than two weeks after Russian airlines made their triumphant return to Phuket, Aeroflot announced an increase in direct flights to the island. The flagship airline of Russia made known on November 12 that it would be adding 14 new flights a week from Russia to Phuket.

As of October 26, Thailand witnessed 7,349,843 international tourists arrive at its airports. According to the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thailand is on course to attract around 11 million tourists this year.

Laos - Pi Mai Lao Anticipated to Draw Another Big Crowd This Year

.
With officials announcing Pi Mai Lao (Lao New Year) extended to five days this year, people nationwide are eagerly anticipating the festival to begin next week.
.
In preparation for the widely celebrated holiday, Vientiane has assembled a variety of fun activities for locals and visitors to enjoy and partake in, including a Miss Vientiane contest on April 8, an arts show, a sandcastle building contest, and sports competitions on the sandy shores along the Mekong.
.
However, due to lack of preparation for the equipment needed by relevant authorities, Pi Mai Lao will be excluding the most iconic parade this year in Vientiane, Miss Lao New Year (Nang Sangkhan), as stated by  Chanthabouly district Governor, Ms Bualon Vongdalasaen.
.
Instead, the highlight will be a parade of Buddha statues that will give bystanders the chance to pour water over the sacred relics.
.
.Traditionally, Lao households celebrate the new year by blessing their homes and family members with a Baci ceremony to bring good luck, prosperity and good health for the upcoming year.
.
A Baci ceremony is considered a bedrock for tradition to Lao people, and is an essential part of any housewarming party, New Year festivities, wedding day, baby shower and farewell gatherings, amongst a plethora of other celebrations.
.
With Luang Prabang being the favored town for visitors during Pi Mai Lao, the quaint little city will be going all out, with a festival on April 10, a Miss Lao New Year contest (Nang Sangkhan) on April 11-12, a Miss Lao New Year parade on April 15, and additional activities planned for April 19.
.
All other provinces across Laos are also busy preparing for the holiday by planning events that they anticipate will be entertaining to visitors, including the tourist hotspot of Vang Vieng where visitors will be met with a traditional dancing and singing contest on April 13.
.
Authorities nationwide have assigned a special task force to ensure the safety of visitors during the festival, while business owners in every province are preparing hotels, guesthouses, resorts and restaurants to welcome the influx of people who are anticipated to visit during the long holiday and generating a healthy income for locals.

Thailand - New Year highway toll up despite harsh enforcement

The death toll has reached almost 300 as more passengers return to Bangkok after the New Year holidays. Deaths are 11 per cent higher than during last year’s Seven Dangerous Days despite harsh measures.
Last year, there were 2,446 accidents during the first five of the dangerous days, compared with 2,753 so far this year, a rise of 12%. Total road casualties (killed and injured) are up 13%, year on year.
Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd stressed yesterday (Jan 3) that severe penalties will be imposed against both drivers and transport operators, particularly vans and inter-provincial buses, if accidents occur.
Driving and operating licences will be suspended or revoked, he said.
The warning came after several vans and buses were found to be travelling above the speed limit.
Heavy traffic was reported on several main roads leading to Bangkok including Mittraphap from the South and Phahon Yothin from the North.
“The prime minister also urges people who are returning to Bangkok to make travel plans to avoid traffic congestion and reduce the number of vehicles on main roads,” Maj Gen Sansern said.
A total of 3,046 vehicles were confiscated from drink drivers from Christmas Day to last Saturday. Of them, 2,477 were motorcycles and 569 were cars.

A total of 3,046 vehicles were confiscated from drink drivers from Christmas Day to last Saturday. Of them, 2,477 were motorcycles and 569 were cars.

Meanwhile, the death toll from road accidents has risen to 292 from more than 2,700 road accidents in the first five days of the “seven dangerous days” of the New Year holiday season.

Drink-driving was the major cause of the crashes, with more than 23% of cases, followed by speeding at 16%.

The death toll from road accidents has risen to 292 from more than 2,700 road accidents in the first five days of the “seven dangerous days” of the New Year holiday season.

Permanent secretary for justice Charnchao Chaiyanukit, in his capacity as chairman of the Road Safety Committee, yesterday said the accumulated road accidents during the five days between Dec 29 and Jan 2 stood at 2,753, with 292 deaths and 2,855 injuries.

Drink-driving still remained the major cause of the crashes, with 23.08%, followed by speeding at 15.98%, said Mr Charnchao.

Most road accidents involved motorcycles, with 83.41%, followed by pick up trucks at 7.24%.

Chiang Mai had the highest number of accumulated road accidents at 108 and the highest number of accumulated injuries also at 108. Nakhon Ratchasima had the highest number of deaths at 12, he said.

No deaths were reported in eight provinces – Trang, Phang Nga, Phrae, Ranong, Samut Prakan, Sing Buri and Sukhothai.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, one person has been killed and 98 injured in 83 road accidents through Saturday, the fifth day of the seven dangerous days period.

The number of accumulated road accidents in this southern province has increased from the same period of last year by 12, the provincial road safety centre said.

The number of injuries has also increased from last year by 22, but the number of deaths reduced by 3.

Meanwhile, a total of 3,046 vehicles have so far been impounded from drunk drivers across the country as part of the New Year holiday road safety campaign.

National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) deputy spokeswoman Sirichan Nga-thong said yesterday that police and soldiers manning road checkpoints across the country have temporarily seized 3,046 vehicles – 2,477 motorcycles and 569 cars, from drunk drivers between Dec 25 and Jan 2.

During the nine-day anti-drive-drive campaign period, authorities have so far taken action against 21,690 motorcyclists and 8,462 drivers of public and private vehicles for violations, Col Sirichan said.

On Jan 2 alone, there were 5,869 violations of the ban involving motorcycles. A total of 525 bikes were seized and 5,040 people face legal action.

There were 2,264 violations involving public and private vehicles on that day, with 259 driving licences and 381 vehicles seized and 1,897 drivers facing legal action, she said.

Army chief Theerachai Nakwanich ordered soldiers to launch a holiday road safety campaign.

Troops and police are arresting people found to be driving while drunk and seized their vehicles. The seized cars and motorcycles can be reclaimed after the New Year festivities.

Illumination festival to light up Christmas in #Bangkok

This festive season, Bangkok will be brighter than it already is and has ever been. Thailand’s first international festival of light, sound, and visual arts, “Bangkok Illumination”, will light up the commercial Em District area and Benjasiri park for an entire month.

The festival is part of an effort to attract domestic and international visitors during the Christmas and New Year holidays, and the government and private sectors have collaborated with both Thai and foreign artists to brighten up Bangkok.
To encourage youngsters to pursue creativity, spaces will be allocated to academic students to allow them to develop and exhibit artworks. All artists are invited to propose ideas for exhibits, and 12 will be displayed throughout the entire festival. The submission deadline is Oct. 25 and the winners will be announced on Dec. 1.
The festival will start on Dec.1 to Jan.3. It is also set to be an annual festival.
So, the first ever festival of light begs the question, how many artists does it take to change a light bulb?
